For hikers who love to explore nature and landscapes, here are some routes you can do in the surroundings of Camping Benidorm Arena Blanca.
Cross of Rincón de Loix
If you have been in Benidorm, surely you have seen the lit cross up in the Sierra Helada mountains above the Rincón de Loix.
Why is there a cross in the Sierra Helada?
Nowadays not many people remember the history of the cross in the Sierra Helada. Catholic monks put it up there in December 1961 in order to protect the town from its fame of being a sin city.
The town had acquired this fame in the fifties when the then mayor Pedro Zaragoza Orts obtained permission from the Franco regime to allow the use of bikinis on Benidorm’s beaches. A garment that was considered sinful in those days. As punishment, one bishop even threatened to put up a sign at the entrance of Benidorm just stating the word “Hell”.
Nowadays, mentioned mayor is remembered as a visionary and the main driving force behind the development of the touristic sector.
The wooden cross was loaded onto the shoulders of numerous Benidorm citizens and so the procession went from the church of San Jaime and Santa Ana to the Sierra Helada. A great civil participation had shown that the people were not really as frivolous as considered. Ever since, this act is remembered as the “Day of Pardon”.
It is an easy route that you can enjoy with a bottle of water and a pair of comfortable shoes. The views are amazing!!
